Battlefield Labs: Shaping the Future of Battlefield Through Community Collaboration
A New Era of Player Influence on Battlefield Games
On February 3, 2025, Battlefield Studios, in partnership with Electronic Arts (EA), announced Battlefield Labs, a groundbreaking program that puts players at the heart of the development process for future Battlefield games. This initiative allows players to test and provide feedback on new game mechanics, features, and overall gameplay experiences.
The announcement highlighted the critical development phase the upcoming Battlefield game has entered, emphasizing the unparalleled value of community collaboration. Selected players will be instrumental in shaping the game's direction by testing and providing feedback on new features and mechanics.
Battlefield Studios will initially invite players from European and North American servers to participate in the first phase of Battlefield Labs. While a specific release date remains unannounced, interested individuals can register their interest via this link.
"This game holds immense potential," stated Vince Zampella, Head of Respawn and Group GM for EA Studios Organization. "Being in the pre-alpha stage, now is the perfect time to test the experiences our teams have been building for our upcoming launch. Battlefield Labs empowers us to do just that."
While participation in Battlefield Labs will be initially limited, Battlefield Studios assures the broader community that updates will be regularly shared, ensuring everyone can follow the development journey. Furthermore, plans are in place to extend this collaborative approach to future Battlefield titles.
"Battlefield Studios comprises DICE, the creators of the Battlefield franchise; Ripple Effect, a studio led by franchise veterans developing a new experience; Motive, the developers behind the acclaimed Star Wars Squadrons and Dead Space; and Criterion, renowned for its racing franchises and contributions to several Battlefield entries."
Inside Battlefield Labs: Mechanics and Features Under the Microscope
While not all aspects of the game will be accessible to participants, Battlefield Studios will focus on key elements to ensure effective feedback integration. Players will test "different pieces of an unfinished puzzle," allowing for timely incorporation of feedback into the final product. A Battlefield news article detailed the mechanics and features included in this initial phase:
Battlefield Studios explains that testing will begin with core gameplay pillars, including combat and destruction. This will transition to balancing and feedback on weapons, vehicles, and gadgets, culminating in testing the integration of these elements within maps, game modes, and squad play. Two established modes, Conquest and Breakthrough, will be included, providing opportunities to explore improvements to existing gameplay.
Conquest mode, known for its large-scale battles, centers on capturing Control Points (flags) from opposing teams. Teams have a limited number of tickets, and the first to deplete their tickets loses. Tickets are lost upon respawning or when the enemy controls more flags.
Breakthrough mode divides players into attackers and defenders. Attackers must capture sectors, while defenders obstruct their progress. A similar ticket system is used, with attackers regaining tickets by securing sectors and earning bonus tickets for eliminating remaining enemy soldiers after a sector capture.
Finally, Battlefield Studios aims to refine the class system, recognizing the importance of player feedback in achieving the optimal balance between form, function, and feel. While confident in their current progress, the team emphasizes the invaluable role player feedback will play in achieving this goal.
