Japan’s PC gaming market has experienced sustained growth in recent years, with consistent year-over-year revenue increases. According to industry expert Dr. Serkan Toto, citing data from Japan’s Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association (CESA), the market has tripled in value over the past four years. Ahead of Tokyo Game Show 2024, CESA reported Japan’s PC gaming revenue reached $1.6 billion USD (¥234.486 billion) in 2023.

While annual growth slowed slightly—rising by about $300 million USD from 2022—this steady expansion means PC gaming now represents 13% of Japan’s gaming market, still largely led by mobile. Dr. Toto notes that while “the dollar figures may appear modest,” the weakened yen means Japanese gamers may actually be spending more in local currency terms.

The mobile gaming sector continues to overshadow PC gaming in Japan’s market. In 2022 alone, mobile gaming—including digital sales like in-app purchases—generated $12 billion USD (¥1.76 trillion). “Smartphones remain Japan’s primary gaming platform,” Dr. Toto emphasized. Notably, Japan’s anime-themed mobile games generate half of global revenue in this category, as highlighted in Sensor Tower’s 2024 market report.

Experts attribute Japan’s surging PC gaming hardware market to growing demand for high-performance equipment and rising esports engagement. Statista Market Insights projects Japan’s PC gaming revenue could reach €3.14 billion (~$3.467 billion USD) this year, with user numbers potentially hitting 4.6 million by 2029.

“Japan has deep roots in PC gaming dating back to early ‘80s home computers,” Dr. Toto observes. “While consoles and smartphones later dominated, PC gaming maintained steady popularity—its niche status has perhaps been overstated.” Key growth drivers include:

⚫︎ Homegrown PC-exclusive hits like Final Fantasy 14 and Kantai Collection
⚫︎ Steam’s enhanced Japanese storefront and market penetration
⚫︎ Cross-platform launches making mobile hits available simultaneously on PC
⚫︎ Improved local PC gaming platforms alongside Steam’s expansion
