Joseph Kosinski is reportedly slated to direct a new Miami Vice film for Universal, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Dan Gilroy, the writer-director behind Nightcrawler, is set to pen the screenplay based on an initial draft by Top Gun: Maverick screenwriter Eric Warren Singer. Gilroy has more recently been developing multiple episodes of the Star Wars series Andor, which was created by his brother, Tony.
Miami Vice was a highly influential NBC police drama created by Anthony Yerkovich and produced by Michael Mann. The series aired for five seasons from 1984 to 1989. Starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as Miami detectives Crockett and Tubbs, the show is still celebrated for redefining the visual style, atmosphere, and sound of television.
The franchise was previously adapted into a 2006 film directed by Michael Mann (Heat, Collateral), featuring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell.
Specific details remain limited at this point, although it's clear that Miami Vice will not be the immediate next project for the Top Gun: Maverick and Tron: Legacy director, especially with Kosinski’s F1 film releasing this June.
Fortunately, this schedule should give Kosinski ample time to decide which Ferrari he needs to track down.
