Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messages, But Enhanced Asynchronous Features
Elden Ring Nightreign will notably omit a key feature from its predecessor: the in-game messaging system. This decision, confirmed by FromSoftware, is a strategic move to optimize gameplay for the anticipated shorter play sessions.
FromSoftware's signature asynchronous messaging system, a staple in their Soulsborne titles, allows players to leave messages for each other, offering assistance, playful misdirection, or simply shared experiences. This system has fostered a strong sense of community and is considered integral to the Soulsborne experience by many fans.
However, game director Junya Ishizaki explained in a January 3rd interview with IGN Japan that Nightreign's faster-paced, multiplayer-focused design wouldn't accommodate the time needed for reading and writing messages. With anticipated play sessions of approximately 40 minutes, the messaging system was deemed detrimental to the streamlined, intense experience FromSoftware aims to create.
Beyond Messaging: Asynchronous Features Remain
While the messaging system is absent, Nightreign will retain and enhance other asynchronous elements. The bloodstain mechanic, for example, will return with improved functionality, allowing players to learn from others' deaths and even loot fallen opponents.
A "Compressed" RPG Experience
The removal of the messaging system aligns with FromSoftware's vision for Nightreign as a more intense and multiplayer-centric experience than its predecessor. The game's three-day structure also contributes to this goal. Ishizaki described the ambition as creating a "compressed RPG," emphasizing variety and minimizing downtime.
Nightreign was revealed at The Game Awards 2024, targeting a 2025 release. A precise launch date is yet to be announced by FromSoftware and Bandai Namco.
