Jacksepticeye's Unannounced Soma Animated Show Falls Apart Unexpectedly

by Aaron Jun 22,2025

Popular YouTuber Jacksepticeye, whose real name is Seán William McLoughlin, has shared a deeply personal update regarding the cancellation of a major creative project—an animated show based on *Soma*, the acclaimed survival horror game developed by Frictional Games. In a recent video titled “A Bad Month,” Jacksepticeye revealed that he had spent an entire year working toward bringing this project to life, only for it to fall apart unexpectedly, leaving him not only disappointed but creatively unmoored.

*Soma*, originally released in 2015, is widely regarded as one of the most thought-provoking and emotionally impactful games in the survival horror genre. It earned critical acclaim for its narrative depth and immersive gameplay—qualities that clearly resonated with Jacksepticeye, who has long praised the game as one of his all-time favorites. His deep appreciation for the title was evident as he described how excited he had been to develop the animated adaptation, which he hoped would bring more attention to the game’s powerful story.

Jacksepticeye discusses Soma animated show development

In his video, Jacksepticeye opened up about the emotional toll of the cancellation. He explained that the idea for the animated series had taken shape over a year of discussions with the developers at Frictional Games. At one point, the project was reportedly ready to move into full production. However, just as momentum was building, the project suddenly collapsed due to unspecified changes in direction from one of the involved parties.

“We were making really great progress on that, and then it all just fell apart out of nowhere,” he said, visibly affected by the setback. While he refrained from naming specific individuals or companies involved, he made clear that the abrupt cancellation left him frustrated and uncertain about his creative path moving forward.

The collapse of the *Soma* animated show significantly disrupted Jacksepticeye’s plans for 2025. He had structured much of his year around the project, anticipating a reduced upload schedule in exchange for being able to share something ambitious and meaningful with his audience. With those plans now upended, he admitted to feeling lost and overwhelmed in the aftermath.

“I had planned a lot of my year around it,” he said. “And then it all fell apart. So all of my plans for the year are flipped upside down. Now what is the priority? What am I doing? I don’t know.”

Frictional Games, the studio behind *Soma*, has since shifted its creative focus away from traditional horror experiences. In comments made following the release of *Amnesia: The Bunker* in 2023, co-founder Thomas Grip noted the studio's intention to explore broader emotional themes beyond fear. This evolving vision may offer some context into the shifting priorities that ultimately led to the cancellation of the animated project.

While fans are undoubtedly disappointed by the news, Jacksepticeye remains a passionate advocate for *Soma*. Despite the setback, his love for the game and its storytelling remains strong—a sentiment that continues to resonate with his audience and fellow fans of the game alike.
