Firaxis, the developer behind Civilization 7, has released patch 1.0.1, addressing player concerns following the game's full launch. The patch, available for PC, Mac, Linux, and Steam Deck, is the first of several planned updates aimed at refining the game based on feedback from the advanced access period. Steam user reviews during the advanced access period were mixed, with common criticisms focusing on the user interface, limited map variety, and a perceived lack of expected features.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick, in an interview with IGN, acknowledged the negative press and player feedback but expressed confidence that the core Civilization fanbase would appreciate the game with further playtime, describing the initial performance as "very encouraging."
This initial patch, however, focuses primarily on bug fixes and gameplay improvements. Key changes include:
Gameplay:
- Resolved an issue causing shortened Ages in Epic and Marathon speed games.
- City-States now transition to Friendly Independent Powers during Age transitions instead of vanishing. They also begin with more units in the Exploration and Modern Ages.
- Improved naval combat consistency, addressing issues with combat strength values, reciprocal damage, and unit movement after combat.
- Preventing the addition of Age Progress in the Modern Age upon completing a Legacy Path milestone.
- Towns now automatically revert to growing when their chosen Focus becomes ineligible.
- The Future Civic is now repeatable across all Ages, with increased costs for repeated use.
- Fixed an issue causing negative food requirements for growth under certain bonus conditions.
- Enhanced rail network reliability for settlements connected via ports.
- Adjusted Loyalty Crisis mechanics in the Antiquity Age, including the ability to purchase Villas.
AI:
- Reduced the frequency of AI offering high-value cities in peace deals.
- Decreased AI war declarations at the start of the Modern Age.
- Increased AI consideration of Ideology before declaring war or offering peace.
- Modified AI war and peace tendencies based on ideological alignment.
Camera:
- Corrected a camera focusing issue on native resolutions.
UI:
- Temporarily replaced the Simplified Chinese font with the Civilization VI font.
- Resolved issues with the Settlement menu, yield icons, and text cut-off on various screens.
- Added notifications for completed espionage actions.
- Corrected issues with city project purchaseability, religion display, and lingering health bars.
- Fixed leader portrait issues and improved alignment in various UI elements.
- Improved the spacing and presentation of Civilization descriptions and icons on the loading screen.
Cross-Play:
Cross-play multiplayer between PC and console players has been temporarily disabled to expedite PC-specific updates. This will not affect console-to-console or PC-to-PC multiplayer. Future patches may be released at different times for PC and consoles.
