Ōkami 2 to Leverage RE Engine for Enhanced Visuals

by Aria Aug 09,2025

Capcom’s announcement of the Ōkami sequel at last year’s The Game Awards sparked speculation about its development in the RE Engine, given Capcom’s return as publisher. IGN has now confirmed this exclusively after discussions with key project leads.

In an in-depth interview, Machine Head Works producer Kiyohiko Sakata verified the use of the RE Engine. When asked about Machine Head Works’ role, he explained:

Machine Head Works collaborates with Capcom and Clovers, with Capcom steering the Ōkami IP’s overarching vision. Clovers leads development, while Machine Head Works, with prior experience alongside Capcom on multiple titles, understands their needs. We’ve also worked with Kamiya-san before, positioning us as a vital link between Capcom and Clovers.
Moreover, we bring expertise in the RE Engine, which Clovers’ team lacks. Machine Head Works supports them in mastering it. Our team also includes veterans of the original Ōkami, contributing valuable insight to this sequel’s development.

When asked why the RE Engine was chosen and how it benefits the Ōkami sequel, Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi responded succinctly: "Yes."

He elaborated briefly: "We can’t share specifics yet, but Capcom believes the RE Engine is essential to fulfilling [director Hideki] Kamiya-san’s artistic vision for this project."

Kamiya added: "The RE Engine is renowned for its stunning visual fidelity. Fans expect that same level of excellence in this game, and we’re confident it will deliver."

Sakata later hinted that the RE Engine could unlock ideas unrealized in the original Ōkami. "With modern technology and the RE Engine, we can achieve what we envisioned years ago—and perhaps even surpass it," he said.

The RE Engine, or Reach for the Moon Engine, was first developed for Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. Capcom has since employed it across major titles like Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, Street Fighter, and Dragon’s Dogma, typically for realistic visuals. Ōkami’s unique art style promises an exciting application. Capcom is also developing the REX engine, with some of its advancements potentially enhancing the RE Engine for this sequel.
