Roblox Tops Steam, Fortnite With Record Player Count

Roblox has reached a new player count milestone, driven by a weekend event that pitted the platform's two biggest games against each other in a "war" to compete for the largest audience.

Public player data from Fortnite.gg shows Roblox hit a staggering peak of 47 million concurrent players last Saturday, August 23. This surge occurred during an "admin war" between the perennial favorite Grow a Garden and the newcomer Steal a Brainrot, where the creators of each game encouraged a massive player turnout.

This event set a new record for Roblox, capping off a summer of unprecedented engagement where the platform had been seeing regular weekend peaks of approximately 30 million players.

For context, the entire Steam platform recorded a peak of 37.9 million online accounts on August 23, with 11.2 million users actively in-game (according to SteamDB). Fortnite, by comparison, saw a daily peak of 1.6 million players. Steam had previously surpassed 40 million online accounts for the first time earlier this year, following the release of Monster Hunter Wilds.

Individually, on August 23, Grow a Garden reached a peak of 22 million players, while Steal a Brainrot attracted 15 million. The viral sensation Grow a Garden involves players buying and cultivating plants, including rare types available for a limited time, which creates significant player spikes as users log in to collect them. Steal a Brainrot, on the other hand, challenges players to collect Pokémon-like creatures and steal them from opponents.

Roblox's growing popularity continues as the platform works to enhance player safety, following several controversies related to its typically young user base. Last month, Roblox introduced new age estimation technology to help verify teenagers and a feature allowing them to establish "trusted connections" for unfiltered chat on the platform.
