Microsoft Reveals Xbox UI Update with Steam Integration, Swiftly Withdraws

by Elijah Jul 24,2025

Microsoft inadvertently showcased a potential Xbox UI update that displays all PC games installed via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and other platforms.

In a recent blog post titled “Opening a Billion Doors with Xbox,” the company briefly unveiled a feature that could allow players to access these games, as noticed by The Verge. The post featured an image of Xbox Series X | S consoles alongside phones, tablets, and television screens, with some device screens displaying a subtle “Steam” tab.

The inclusion of Valve’s PC gaming platform is striking, given its lack of integration with Microsoft’s gaming hardware. The image was promptly removed from the post, suggesting the Xbox team did not intend for the Steam reference to be spotted by sharp-eyed readers.

According to The Verge’s sources, Microsoft is developing an update to connect users to their Steam library and other PC storefronts, enabling players to view all games installed on their PCs and their respective platforms. However, the project remains in its “early stages,” and no immediate rollout is expected until further details emerge.

The unexpected appearance of Steam in an Xbox UI mockup is noteworthy, even if accidental. Over the past decade, Microsoft has increasingly brought its titles to PC and other platforms, with games like Pentiment and Grounded now available on PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch, and speculation persists about the Master Chief Collection arriving on PlayStation.

For years, Microsoft has worked to bridge the gap between Xbox and PC gaming. Its recent “This is an Xbox” campaign highlights the range of devices where Xbox games can be played. In a Polygon interview last year, Xbox head Phil Spencer hinted at a future where PC storefronts like Itch.io and the Epic Games Store could be accessible on Xbox hardware.

Reports suggest Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox, slated for 2027, will lean even more heavily into PC-like functionality than any previous Xbox console.
