by Isabella Jun 13,2025

James Gunn has officially confirmed that a new Wonder Woman movie is currently in development, revealing it's “being written right now.”

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly to promote the upcoming Superman film, DC Studios co-head James Gunn shared that this new Wonder Woman project is being developed independently from the previously announced Paradise Lost HBO Max series.

“We're working on Wonder Woman,” Gunn stated. “Wonder Woman's being written right now.”

Beyond the pages of comics, Diana of Themyscira has faced a string of challenges in recent years. Her live-action film franchise starring Gal Gadot lost momentum after the mixed reception of Wonder Woman 1984. Additionally, she’s never had a dedicated animated series, and her first-ever solo video game was cancelled despite being announced back in 2021.

As IGN writer Carlos Morales recently noted, “At the peak of the Marvel Cinematic Universe vs. DCEU rivalry in the late 2010s, the original Wonder Woman film stood out as one of the DCEU’s biggest triumphs. The 2017 movie received widespread acclaim and grossed over $800 million globally. Following the divisive reactions to Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad, Patty Jenkins’ take on Diana resonated with audiences in a way few earlier DC films had. However, the 2020 sequel Wonder Woman 1984 fell short, splitting critics and failing to recoup its theatrical budget.”

That film launched simultaneously on HBO Max and in theaters due to pandemic-related concerns limiting audience turnout.

A third installment was initially planned but eventually saw development stall, with no updates emerging until now. Naturally, with news of a new Wonder Woman film in the works, speculation about who will portray Diana moving forward is sure to intensify.

Superman hits theaters on July 11, marking the official start of Gunn’s reimagined DC Universe. The film precedes Peacemaker Season 2, which arrives on HBO Max August 21, 2025. Supergirl follows on June 26, 2026, though a release date for the Lanterns TV show remains unannounced.

Other upcoming DCU titles include Clayface, set for a September 11, 2026 debut. Meanwhile, the DCU film The Authority appears to be facing production hurdles. Gunn also revealed that the Peacemaker spinoff Waller “has had a couple of setbacks, frankly.” On a more positive note, the HBO Max series Booster Gold “is going pretty strong,” while Paradise Lost continues “slow moving, but it's moving.”
