Reynolds Proposes Bold R-Rated Star Wars Concept to Disney

by Olivia Jul 29,2025

Ryan Reynolds reveals he proposed an R-rated Star Wars project to Disney, though its future remains uncertain.

The Deadpool star discussed his non-Marvel endeavors on The Box Office Podcast. While he didn’t clarify whether Disney greenlit the idea or if it would be a film or series, he shared insights into his vision for the project.

“I suggested to Disney, ‘How about an R-rated Star Wars story?’” Reynolds said. “It doesn’t need to focus on major characters... there’s a diverse cast to explore. R-rated doesn’t mean crude. It’s a way to bring deeper emotion, and I’m curious why studios hesitate to take that risk.”

Reynolds has a strong track record with R-rated films. He played a key role in three of the top-five highest-grossing R-rated movies ever: Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and Deadpool & Wolverine. The latter, a Marvel film featuring Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, holds the record as the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time, earning over $1.3 billion (via Box Office Mojo).

“I wouldn’t want to star in it; that wouldn’t suit me,” Reynolds noted.

It’s unclear if this success would translate to an R-rated Star Wars project, but Reynolds is clearly intrigued by the idea. However, he emphasized he wouldn’t take an on-screen role.

“I wouldn’t want to star in it; that wouldn’t suit me,” Reynolds added. “I’d rather produce or write, working behind the scenes. These kinds of franchises thrive on rarity and surprise. Star Wars has less scarcity with Disney+, but there’s still room to captivate audiences.”

Meanwhile, Reynolds continues his work with Marvel. Though he’s skeptical about Deadpool joining the Avengers, he has reportedly been quietly advocating for a Deadpool and X-Men crossover film for some time.

As for Star Wars, an R-rated project may be far off. For more on Disney’s plans for the franchise, check out Star Wars: Starfighter, a film in development with Shawn Levy, a frequent Reynolds collaborator. Details are sparse, but Barbie’s Ryan Gosling is confirmed to star.
