Rumors are swirling that Red Dead Redemption 2 could soon grace the Nintendo Switch 2 by the end of 2025, alongside a next-gen upgrade for the PS5 and Xbox Series X and S. According to GameReactor, sources close to Rockstar Games suggest that a Switch 2 version of this beloved Wild West epic is in the works, complemented by a "next-gen upgrade patch" designed to enhance the game for current-gen systems as well. While specifics remain under wraps, the insider information hints at a potential release as early as later this year.
This buzz is echoed by Nintenduo, which claims that the Switch 2 port of Red Dead Redemption 2 could see the light of day within Take-Two's current fiscal year, ending on March 31, 2026. Whether this port will be available digitally, physically, or both, remains to be seen.
When Red Dead Redemption 2 launched in 2018, it was hailed as a "masterpiece" by IGN, earning a perfect 10/10 score. IGN's Red Dead Redemption 2 review praised it as "a meticulously polished open-world ode to the outlaw era." The prospect of this acclaimed title coming to the Switch 2 seems plausible, especially following comments from Take-Two's CEO Strauss Zelnick in a recent Q&A with investors. Zelnick expressed "great optimism" for Nintendo's new platform and highlighted improved support for third-party publishers compared to previous Nintendo consoles.
Zelnick revealed plans to launch four titles on the Switch 2, marking a more extensive engagement with Nintendo's platform than ever before. He mentioned, "We're launching four titles with Nintendo Switch 2, and that's I think a bigger array of releases than we've ever offered before with a new Nintendo platform." He noted the historically challenging nature of being a third-party in the Nintendo ecosystem but praised Nintendo's efforts to improve this dynamic. Zelnick's statement also suggested that while not every title would necessarily be brought to every platform, there are significant opportunities for catalog releases.
Take-Two's confirmed titles for the Switch 2 include Civilization 7 on launch day (June 5), the NBA 2K and WWE 2K series (specific games and release dates yet to be announced), and Borderlands 4 on September 12. While these titles are expected given Take-Two's existing portfolio on the original Switch, Zelnick's comments leave room for the possibility of other notable releases, perhaps including gems from their back catalog like GTA V or Red Dead Redemption 2. However, a Switch 2 version of GTA 6 seems less likely.
