Phil Spencer Updates on Rare's Everwild Development

by Alexis May 05,2025

Ever since its announcement at Microsoft's X019 presentation over five years ago, Rare's Everwild has been shrouded in mystery and speculation. The game's absence from Xbox showcases and rumors of reboots sparked concerns that it might have been shelved. However, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has reassured fans that Everwild is very much alive and in development.

In a recent interview with XboxEra, Spencer expressed his excitement for Everwild, mentioning a visit to Rare's UK studio, where he got an update on the game's progress. Rare, known for its live service pirate adventure game Sea of Thieves, is diligently working on Everwild. Spencer highlighted his enthusiasm for several upcoming titles, including State of Decay and the next game from Double Fine, led by Tim Schafer, but specifically mentioned Everwild, stating, "It's nice to see the team with Everwild and the progress that they're making."

Spencer emphasized that Microsoft is committed to giving developers the time they need, even with a packed release schedule bolstered by acquisitions like Bethesda and Activision Blizzard. He also mentioned an upcoming visit to Vancouver to meet with the Gears of War developer, The Coalition, underscoring Microsoft's ongoing support for their studios.

Everwild has faced its share of challenges, including a rumored reboot, which Microsoft has denied, and the departure of creative director Simon Woodroffe in 2020. The role was filled by veteran designer Gregg Mayles, whose portfolio includes Donkey Kong Country, Banjo-Kazooie, Viva Piñata, and Sea of Thieves.

As for what Everwild entails, initial reports suggested it would be a third-person adventure game with elements of a god game. However, given the extended development period, its final form may differ. The last trailer, released in July 2020, described Everwild as "a brand new IP from Rare. A unique and unforgettable experience awaits in a natural and magical world."

Microsoft's lineup of in-development games is extensive, including the Perfect Dark reboot, the next Halo, and Playground's new Fable game. Additionally, Bethesda is working on The Elder Scrolls 6, and Activision is preparing this year's Call of Duty. In the near future, id Software's Doom: The Dark Ages is set to launch in May.
