Obsidian Entertainment Confident About Upcoming New Titles

Obsidian Entertainment is making significant strides with The Outer Worlds 2, the follow-up to their popular space action RPG. Despite the studio's primary focus on Avowed, Urquhart emphasized that The Outer Worlds 2 is "going really well." In a detailed interview with Limit Break Network on YouTube, Urquhart expressed his admiration for the team's dedication and expertise. "I’m impressed with the team," he stated. "We have a lot of people on that game that get it—who have worked on the first one and have been with us for a long time. So I’ve actually been really impressed by it."

Urquhart candidly discussed the challenges faced by the studio, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and their acquisition by Microsoft. During this period, the team was stretched thin across multiple projects, including Grounded and Pentiment. "We were kind of a crappy developer for about a year, year and a half," Urquhart admitted. There were even considerations to halt The Outer Worlds 2 development in favor of Avowed, but the studio decided to maintain its commitment to all ongoing projects.

Reflecting on the hectic period, Urquhart recounted the challenges: "We got acquired [in 2018], and we were figuring out how to be acquired, and then Covid happens, and we're trying to get Outer Worlds done, and we're trying to get the DLC done, and we're trying to move Avowed forward, and we want to start again on Outer Worlds 2, get Outer Worlds 2 moving, and Grounded moving, and Josh is working on Pentiment."

Despite the challenges, Urquhart is optimistic about the outcomes. He praised the success of Grounded and Pentiment, noting that Avowed is "looking great," and The Outer Worlds 2 is "looking incredible." Although specific details about the game content remain under wraps, the delay of Avowed to 2025 suggests possible adjustments to the release schedules of other Obsidian projects.

The Outer Worlds 2 was announced back in 2021, with minimal updates since. Urquhart acknowledged the possibility of further delays, similar to those experienced with Avowed. Nevertheless, he reaffirmed the studio's dedication to delivering high-quality games. "We will get there with all these games," he assured. "Are they going to be on the timelines that we originally thought? No. But we’re going to get there, and I think that’s been proven now." Both The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed are expected to launch on PC and Xbox Series S/X, promising exciting additions to Obsidian's acclaimed lineup.
