Nintendo has announced an innovative approach to game distribution with the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, set to launch in June 2025. In a recent customer support post following the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, the company revealed that some of the new Switch 2 game cards will contain download keys rather than actual game data. This means that when you purchase one of these game-key cards, you'll need to insert it into your Switch 2 and download the game from the internet. To ensure transparency, Nintendo will clearly label these game-key card cases on the front lower portion of the packaging.
This news has sparked discussions among fans who value the traditional plug-and-play experience of physical games. Concerns have arisen that these game-key cards might eventually replace standard cartridges entirely. However, current evidence suggests otherwise. While some titles like Street Fighter 6 and the Bravely Default remaster will use game-key cards, others such as Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza will not, indicating a selective approach.
It appears that game-key cards will primarily be used for larger games that benefit from digital distribution, such as Hogwarts Legacy or Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Notably, CD Projekt Red has confirmed that Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition will come with a full 64 GB game card on the Switch 2’s launch day, suggesting that not all games will follow the key card model.
During the Switch 2 Direct, Nintendo emphasized the advanced technology of their new red game cards, which boast faster data reading speeds compared to the original Switch. This focus on improved hardware suggests that traditional game cards will continue to play a significant role. Nintendo has previously experimented with hybrid models, such as with LA Noire and NBA 2K18 on the original Switch, which required additional downloads.
