Every superhero saga needs its antagonist, and in Captain America: Brave New World, fans were introduced to The Leader, portrayed by Tim Blake Nelson. The character's transformation was achieved through practical effects and makeup, resulting in a visibly mutated appearance that, while inspired by the comics, diverged in its final design.

Blue Whale Studios, responsible for the character's design and effects in the MCU film, recently shared insights into their initial vision for Sam Sterns' alter ego, which closely aligned with the comic book version. The Atlanta-based special effects company initially aimed for a sickly aesthetic for the character. They showcased this design on Instagram, featuring an engorged head and pale green skin, though it lacked the intricate mutation details seen in the final film. The studio also shared a video of the prosthetics application process on Nelson, offering fans a fascinating glimpse into the character's creation.

"We were originally tasked with designing and applying the practical makeup for The Leader on the talented Tim Blake Nelson in Captain America: Brave New World," Blue Whale Studios explained. "As is common in film, the story evolved, leading to a shift in creative direction during reshoots, and our design was not used in the final cut. Nonetheless, we are immensely proud of the work we produced.

"Taking cues from the original comic book art, we crafted a look that was both grounded and iconic — faithful to the source material while achieving a refined, natural realism. We were particularly pleased with how lightweight and comfortable the final makeup was for the actor, a testament to the dedication of our exceptional team."

This original concept closely mirrored The Leader's debut in the Marvel comics in Tales to Astonish #62 from 1964. Interestingly, the final design in Brave New World also reflects more recent comic iterations, specifically from 2018's Immortal Hulk.

The Leader's journey to becoming a villain in the MCU was hinted at back in 2008's The Incredible Hulk, where Sam Sterns was exposed to Bruce Banner's Gamma radiation-infused blood. Although he remained a normal human at the time, this exposure eventually transformed him into the character seen at the start of Brave New World.

Last May, reports surfaced that Captain America: Brave New World underwent reshoots to introduce a new villainous character, Sidewinder, leader of the Serpent Society, played by Giancarlo Esposito, known for his roles in Breaking Bad, Star Wars, and The Boys.

Ahead of the film's release, five-time WWE world champion Seth Rollins confirmed that his role was cut following extensive script rewrites and subsequent reshoots.
