Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 – A Nostalgic Journey with Modern Twists
Turn-Based Combat Meets Real-Time Challenges
Drawing inspiration from the Belle Epoque era of France and classic JRPGs, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 uniquely blends turn-based strategy with real-time elements. Heavily influenced by the Final Fantasy and Persona series, the game aims to create a distinctive identity within the RPG landscape.
Following a positive demo at SGF, creative director Guillaume Broche discussed the game's development. In an interview with Eurogamer, Broche highlighted his passion for turn-based combat and the lack of high-fidelity visuals in the genre. He cited Persona (Atlus) and Octopath Traveler (Square Enix) as stylistic influences, stating, "If nobody wants to do it, I will do it."
The game's narrative centers on preventing the mysterious Paintress from unleashing death once more, set against breathtaking environments such as the gravity-defying Flying Waters. Combat demands quick reflexes; players issue turn-based commands but must also react in real-time to enemy attacks. This system evokes comparisons to Persona, Final Fantasy, and Sea of Stars.
Broche expressed surprise at the overwhelmingly positive reception, stating it exceeded his expectations.
While acknowledging Persona's influence, Broche clarified to PC Gamer that the Final Fantasy series (specifically FFVIII, IX, and X) played a more significant role. He emphasized that Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 isn't a direct imitation but a reflection of his personal experiences with these classics. The game's dynamic camera movements and menus, however, borrow from Persona's design.
The open world allows for seamless party member switching and the use of unique traversal skills to solve environmental puzzles. Broche encourages players to experiment with character builds, aiming to create a game that resonates deeply with players, much like the classics influenced his own creative journey.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is slated for release on PC, PS5, and Xbox in 2025.
