Rockstar has postponed the release of Grand Theft Auto VI to May 26, 2026, shifting from its original fall 2025 target.

In an official statement, Rockstar expressed regret for the extended delay of the game, anticipated to be a monumental entertainment event.

"We deeply apologize for this later-than-expected release," Rockstar stated. "Your enthusiasm for the new Grand Theft Auto is truly humbling, and we’re grateful for your continued support and patience as we finalize the game.

"Our aim with every release is to surpass your expectations, and Grand Theft Auto VI is no different. We hope you understand our need for additional time to meet the quality standards you deserve.

"We’re excited to share more details with you soon."

Rockstar’s announcement confirms the GTA VI release date but offers no new assets, prolonging the wait for Trailer 2. The statement also omits details on launch platforms, fueling speculation about a potential PC release alongside PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S in May 2026.

"There’s always a chance of further delays, and absolute certainty can tempt fate," Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two, told IGN in February when asked about confidence in hitting the fall 2025 target. "But we’re feeling optimistic."

In a new note to investors today, May 2, Zelnick endorsed the decision to push GTA VI into Take-Two’s 2027 fiscal year.

"We fully support Rockstar Games taking extra time to fulfill their creative vision for Grand Theft Auto VI, which is set to deliver a groundbreaking entertainment experience that exceeds fan expectations.

"While we recognize the significance of shifting release dates and the immense global anticipation for Grand Theft Auto VI, our commitment to excellence remains unwavering. As we roll out our robust lineup, we anticipate sustained business growth and increased shareholder value over the coming years."

The GTA VI delay clears the second half of 2025 for other major releases, giving titles like Gearbox’s Borderlands 4, EA’s Battlefield, Bungie’s Marathon, and Sony’s Ghost of Yotei more room to shine. Nintendo, gearing up for the Switch 2 launch, will likely benefit from this shift as well.

However, developers who rushed to release games before GTA VI’s original fall 2025 window may face setbacks. Studios planning launches around May 2026 will now need to reassess their strategies to compete with this blockbuster title.
