Gaming Mouse Fire: Apartment Nearly Destroyed

by Finn May 13,2025

Imagine the shock of finding your gaming mouse on fire while your PC is in sleep mode. This is exactly what happened to redditor lommelinn, who narrowly avoided a disaster when their Gigabyte M6880X mouse burst into flames, nearly setting their apartment ablaze. The incident occurred early in the morning, with the user rushing into their room upon smelling smoke, only to find the mouse engulfed in large flames, filling the room with black smoke.

Quick action by lommelinn allowed them to extinguish the fire, though not before inhaling a significant amount of smoke and leaving their room, including a modular synthesizer, covered in black particles. The mouse, an older wired optical model from Gigabyte, draws power via USB 2.0 at 5V and 0.5A, making its catastrophic failure all the more puzzling.

Images shared by the user show the extent of the damage, with the top rear panel of the mouse completely melted, while the underside remained relatively unscathed. The reason behind this selective damage remains a mystery. Additionally, the damage extended to the user's desk and mousepad, with visible melting.

In a follow-up post, lommelinn expressed their disbelief at the unexpected event, noting that their PC was in sleep mode at the time. They also checked the USB port with a voltage meter and found it to be functioning normally, leaving them without a clue as to how such an incident could occur.
