Destiny 2's Prophecy Year: Essential Guardian Guide

by Ethan May 18,2025

Get ready, Guardians! Bungie has just announced an exciting lineup for Destiny 2, promising two new expansions and significant updates for both paying and free players as part of the "Year of Prophecy." This year marks a significant milestone with four major content updates, split between two paid expansions and two free updates, ensuring everyone can enjoy the new content.

Kicking things off is "Rite of the Nine," a free update already available to all players, offering a fresh take on dungeon diving. Whether you're a seasoned veteran or new to the depths, you'll encounter familiar dungeons like Prophecy, Spire of the Watcher, and Ghosts of the Deep with unique twists. Expect to reconnect with Orin and enjoy refreshed dungeon weapons that add a new layer of excitement to your adventures.

On July 15, the new expansion, Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate, will launch, marking the beginning of a multiyear saga involving the mysterious Nine. This paid expansion introduces new characters, Lodi and Ikora, and takes place on a new destination, Kepler, inspired by the puzzle-solving and pathfinding challenges of Destiny 2's dungeons. Players can look forward to new enemies, weapons, gear, and destination-specific abilities, promising deep exploration and discovery.

Alongside the expansion, major core game innovations will be introduced on July 15, including revised armor and gear systems for enhanced buildcrafting and a new activity selection screen called the Portal. This update allows players to choose between Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, Crucible Ops, and the new Solo Ops, catering to both group and solo gameplay preferences. With 50 new modifiers, players can customize their gameplay and chase specific rewards through curated activity rotations.

Pre-order bonuses for Destiny 2: The Edge of Fate include an instantly unlockable Exotic Ghost and Legendary Emblem. For those looking for even more, the Year of Prophecy Edition and Ultimate Edition offer additional content and exclusive items:

The second major update, Ash & Iron, arrives on September 9, followed by the Renegades expansion on December 2. The year wraps up with the Shadow & Order update on March 3. Destiny 2: Renegades draws inspiration from the "legendary Star Wars universe," blending Destiny's unique storytelling and gameplay with iconic sci-fi elements.

These announcements come after Bungie's layoffs of 220 staff members in July 2024, following another 100 layoffs less than a year prior. Despite these challenges, the game continues to evolve and offer new experiences for its dedicated community.

Bungie is also working on Marathon, a reboot of their classic franchise, which was first revealed in May 2023. A recent hands-on preview by IGN suggests that Marathon could be a thrilling addition to the Bungie portfolio, set to launch on PC and consoles in September.
