Dead by Daylight is revamping The Nightmare, Freddy Krueger, addressing player concerns about his current weakness. While his teleportation, Dream Pallets, and Dream Snares offer unique mechanics, they often require specific builds to be effective. Behaviour Interactive is directly responding to fan feedback with substantial adjustments.

The January 2025 Developer Update details a forthcoming patch that overhauls The Nightmare. The most impactful change is the ability to freely switch between Dream Snares and Dream Pallets, granting greater tactical flexibility. Dream Snares are updated to move at 12 m/s, traversing walls and stairs, while Dream Pallets can now be triggered to explode, damaging Survivors. Critically, both powers' effects vary depending on whether a Survivor is asleep or awake, better reflecting Freddy's power dynamics in the Dream World. The exact release date remains unannounced, but these mechanics are currently in the Public Test Build (PTB).

What Are the Changes Being Introduced for The Nightmare?

The Nightmare's traversal abilities are enhanced. He can now teleport to any generator in the Dream World, or, significantly, appear within 12 meters of healing Survivors. This incentivizes Survivors to prioritize alarm clocks, as healing in the Dream World reveals their location via Killer Instinct. These changes aim to make The Nightmare more competitive with other Killers.

Beyond his core abilities, several Add-Ons are being adjusted to encourage creative loadout choices. However, his Perks (Fire Up, Remember Me, and Blood Warden) remain unchanged, a decision that may aim to preserve Freddy's original design intent, even if those perks aren't currently meta choices.

Upcoming The Nightmare Rework Notes

  • [NEW] Dream Snares now move at 12 m/s with a 5-second cooldown. They can pass through walls and stairs but not off ledges.
  • [NEW] Dream Snares now interact differently with sleeping and awake Survivors. Sleeping Survivors are Hindered for 4 seconds; awake Survivors gain 30 seconds on their Sleep Meter.

  • [NEW] The Nightmare can teleport to completed, blocked, and endgame Generators, and to any Survivor healing in the Dream World. Teleporting to a healing Survivor places The Nightmare within 12 meters. Survivors within 8 meters are revealed via Killer Instinct and receive a 15-second Sleep Meter increase.
  • [CHANGE] Teleport cooldown reduced from 45 to 30 seconds; Teleport is no longer cancellable.
  • [NEW] In the Dream World, healing Survivors are revealed by Killer Instinct for the duration of healing (lingering 3 seconds afterward), allowing The Nightmare to teleport to them.
