Zelda: Breath of the Wild Switch 2 Edition Omits Expansion Pass

by Logan Dec 16,2025

Fans are grappling with ongoing uncertainty about the Nintendo Switch 2's pricing, particularly in the U.S., where costs remain unclear. New details reveal an additional expense for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild on the Switch 2. The enhanced edition excludes the Expansion Pass, requiring an extra $20 for the DLC if you don’t already own it.

This may seem straightforward, but the pricing structure for Switch 2 games has sparked widespread confusion since last week’s announcement. If you own Breath of the Wild on the original Switch, you can play it on the Switch 2, including any previously purchased DLC, without issues.

The Nintendo Switch 2 Enhanced Edition of Breath of the Wild offers upgraded visuals, improved performance, achievements, and access to the new "Zelda Notes" feature in the Nintendo Switch Online app. Current owners of the original game won’t get these enhancements automatically but can buy an "upgrade pack" for $10 to unlock them.

For new buyers, the Switch 2 Enhanced Edition of Breath of the Wild costs $70—$10 more than the original game’s launch price. However, it doesn’t include the Expansion Pass, meaning an additional $20 for the full experience, bringing the total to $90.

Nintendo confirmed to IGN: "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition does not include The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Expansion Pass DLC. That DLC is available as a separate purchase."

While this aligns with what existing owners have paid, including the upgrade cost, it’s notable that many publishers reduce prices for older games or bundle DLC in enhanced editions for newer consoles. Spending $90 on a 2017 title, originally released on the Wii U, feels steep—especially with Mario Kart World priced at $80 and the Switch 2 potentially costing $450 or more, depending on tariff decisions.

Given Breath of the Wild’s strong sales, most interested players likely already own it. However, for those waiting to experience it on the Switch 2, the additional cost of the acclaimed Expansion Pass is something to consider.
