Capcom Axes GFWL in Lost Planet 2, Ending Online Co-Op Functionality

by Blake Aug 10,2025

Capcom has silently updated Lost Planet 2 to eliminate Games for Windows Live (GFWL), effectively disabling online features and wiping previous save data.

This change has stunned fans on the subreddit, especially since Lost Planet 2 thrives on multiplayer. Our 2010 review noted: "At its heart, it’s a potentially stellar action game with striking visuals, but its confusing structure, poor explanations, and frustrating checkpoints sap much of the enjoyment — not to mention it’s nearly unplayable solo. It shines in rare, flawless co-op moments, but those don’t outweigh its flaws."

Losing save data is rough, but the real sting is the loss of co-op, as our review highlighted: "it’s basically unplayable as a single-player game." Without GFWL, the game’s core appeal is gutted.

"Co-op was the game’s main draw," said one player. "They might as well have pulled it from Steam entirely," while another questioned: "They removed online play from a game built for online co-op?"

GFWL, Microsoft’s now-defunct online gaming service, offered features like Xbox achievements and cross-platform multiplayer. Its discontinuation forces players to endure long login times or hope for developer updates — a slim prospect for a 15-year-old title like Lost Planet 2.

Fortunately, new players are unaffected, as Capcom has halted sales of Lost Planet 2. A note on its Steam page reads: "We’ve identified an issue with game installation tied to Games for Windows LIVE. We’ve temporarily disabled purchases on Steam while we investigate further. Thank you for your patience as we work to resolve this."

Other Capcom titles, including Street Fighter x Tekken and Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, face similar issues, with matching Steam page notices. Some fans remain optimistic, recalling that Capcom successfully replaced GFWL with Steamworks multiplayer for Resident Evil.

We’ve reached out to Capcom for comment and will update you upon their response.

Our 2010 take on Lost Planet 2 deemed it ‘decent’ at launch.
