Hulu may be bringing Buffy back from the dead. Variety reports a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot is in the works, with Sarah Michelle Gellar potentially returning as Buffy, albeit in a recurring role. The series will focus on a new Slayer.
Adding star power to the project, Academy Award-winning director Chloé Zhao (Nomadland, Eternals) is in negotiations to direct and executive produce. Nora and Lila Zuckerman are attached to write and serve as showrunners. Notably, original creator Joss Whedon is not involved, following allegations of creating a toxic work environment on the original series and its spin-off, Angel.
Plot details remain scarce, but the reboot will center around a new Slayer, with the possibility of Gellar's return as a key element.
The original Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which ran for seven seasons (1997-2003), followed Buffy Summers, a high school student chosen to fight vampires and other supernatural creatures. She was aided by her friends Willow, Xander, and Watcher Rupert Giles. The series' legacy continued through a spin-off, Angel, and subsequent comic books.
