Avowed Director Envisions Expanding the Game's Universe
Potential for DLC or Future Installments

Avowed's strong sales performance has pleased both Microsoft and Obsidian. In a February 22, 2025 interview with Bloomberg, Game Director Carrie Patel explored the likelihood of additional content or a sequel.
While no official announcements have been made, Patel expressed enthusiasm for continuing her creative journey with the franchise. "Having established this rich world and developed our team's expertise, I'd love to explore more opportunities within this setting," she explained.
Evolution of Avowed Through Development

Avowed's development path wasn't without its challenges and transformations. Patel described the process as initially chaotic before finding its final direction.
The project originated in 2018 amid Obsidian's preparations to sell the company, despite previous successes with titles like Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity. After Microsoft's acquisition in 2020, the team scaled back certain features before undergoing a leadership change and complete reboot in January 2021.
Patel reflected on managing the 80-person team during this transitional phase. "Typically, creative redirection happens with a much smaller group," she noted. Her vision ultimately led to emphasizing Pillars of Eternity's narrative legacy while transitioning from open-world to more refined open zones.
"Every project follows this pattern," Patel observed. "Early chaos gradually gives way to cohesion and clarity."
Obsidian Explores Pillars of Eternity Tactics Concept

With Avowed reviving interest in the Pillars universe, Obsidian has expressed interest in developing a tactics-based spinoff. Director Josh Sawyer discussed this possibility during a February 23, 2025 Twitch stream.
"A tactical Pillars game appeals to both fans and our developers," Sawyer commented. "The challenge lies in determining appropriate scope regarding team size, visual fidelity, and game length." Previous interest from developers in such a project may now find momentum thanks to Avowed's success.
Sawyer separately emphasized his desire for Pillars of Eternity 3 development with a budget comparable to Baldur's Gate 3's $100 million allocation - significantly larger than that of Deadfire.
