In *Avowed*, you have the option to select from five distinct Backgrounds, each providing unique dialogue options and a starting weapon. Importantly, all Backgrounds can utilize any equipment and abilities within the game. The five Backgrounds available are: Arcane Scholar, Court Augur, Noble Scion, Vanguard Scout, and War Hero. Below, you'll find a narrative overview of each:

  • Arcane Scholar: Your character hails from an academic background, having graduated from Bragganhyl Academy. Your scholarly pursuits, particularly a treatise on soul lineages, stirred controversy, leading to your arrest by a local lord. However, the emperor saw your value and recruited you to serve in the imperial court archives. Arcane Scholars possess knowledge in the occult, legal precedents, historical observations, and poetry, which influences their dialogue choices.
  • Court Augur: With a tragic backstory, Court Augurs were once shunned as witches after their village faced crop failure and their mystical insights fueled suspicion. Forced to flee to Highcrown, they were elevated by the emperor to serve as his personal mystic. This Background resonates with the spiritual and magical elements of the game, offering dialogue options aligned with the mystic arts and a strong connection to the companion Giatta.
  • Noble Scion: As a Noble Scion, your character comes from a lineage of wealth and influence but marred by scandal and moral decay. After your family's downfall, you sought refuge and a new purpose under the emperor's wing. This Background is ideal for players committed to serving the empire's interests across the Living Lands.
  • Vanguard Scout: Vanguard Scouts lived a modest life until spared from execution by the empire. Preferring the wilderness over the political intrigue of cities, they serve as invaluable scouts and trackers for the emperor. This Background enhances the role-playing experience for those favoring a hunter archetype and aligns well with the companion Marius.
  • War Hero: Having quelled a Skaenite uprising, War Heroes earned the emperor's favor and a position among elite warriors. Their loyalty and combat prowess make them essential to the empire. This Background suits players interested in embodying a warrior and may find a strong connection with the companion Kai.

Each Background in *Avowed* comes equipped with a starting weapon, though these are of Common Quality and one-handed melee types. These weapons will need upgrading or replacing as you progress through the game. Therefore, choosing a Background should be based on the narrative and role-playing elements you wish to explore, as all starting weapons can be found early in the Living Lands.

  • Arcane Scholar – Common Dagger (One-Handed)
  • Court Augur – Common Mace (One-Handed)
  • Noble Scion – Common Sword (One-Handed)
  • Vanguard Scout – Common Axe (One-Handed)
  • War Hero – Common Spear (One-Handed)

You can locate your starting weapon leaning against crates near the shipwreck during the On Strange Shores Quest.
