Nintendo has unveiled our first detailed look at a Nintendo Switch 2 game cartridge, just ahead of the console's much-anticipated launch next month. In a recent video from the Nintendo Today app, we get a glimpse at the official Switch 2 carry case, which is thoughtfully designed with slots to safely store up to six Nintendo Switch 1 and Switch 2 cartridges.
As previously reported, Switch 2 cartridges maintain the same size and shape as their Switch 1 counterparts, ensuring that the new console can play games from both generations using just one cartridge slot. However, there's a striking new feature: the color of the cartridges. Switch 2 cartridges are distinctively red, a design choice that appears to be consistent across all titles, not limited to just the Mario Kart World cartridge showcased in the video. If you haven't yet downloaded the Nintendo Today app, you can still catch a glimpse of the video courtesy of OatmealDome on X / Twitter.
The top of the cartridge's printed design sticker now sports a Switch 2 logo, setting it apart from the original Nintendo Switch design. The official Switch 2 carrying case, as highlighted by OatmealDome, not only has room for the console with the new Joy-Con 2 attached but also includes space for six cartridges and two Joy-Con 2 straps. It's no surprise that the cartridge sizes remain unchanged, ensuring compatibility and ease of use.
Interestingly, Switch 2 cartridges retain the same foul-tasting coating as their predecessors, a safety measure to deter players from putting them in their mouths. "We don't want anybody to be at risk of any unwanted consumption," explained Switch 2 director Takuhiro Dohta in a previous interview with GameSpot. "We have indeed made it so that if it enters your mouth, you'll spit it out."
