Sony's PC Port Strategy: No Major PS5 User Loss Foreseen
Sony isn't concerned about significant PS5 user attrition due to PC releases of PlayStation titles. This assertion stems from a recent investor Q&A outlining Sony's PC publishing strategy.
Despite launching its first PC port (Horizon Zero Dawn) in 2020 and significantly accelerating efforts since acquiring Nixxes Software in 2021, Sony maintains that PC ports haven't negatively impacted PS5 sales. A company representative stated, "In terms of losing users to PCs, we have neither confirmed that any such trend is underway, nor do we see it as a major risk, so far."
PS5 Sales Remain Strong
This confidence is supported by PS5 sales figures. As of November 2024, 65.5 million units have been sold, closely mirroring the PS4's sales trajectory (over 73 million in its first four years). Sony attributes the slight difference primarily to PS5 supply chain constraints during the pandemic, rather than competition from PC ports.
A More Aggressive PC Porting Approach
Sony intends to further intensify its PC porting strategy. In 2024, President Hiroki Totoki announced plans to become more "aggressive," reducing the time lag between PS5 and PC releases. Marvel's Spider-Man 2 exemplifies this, launching on PC just 15 months after its PS5 debut—a significantly shorter window than the two-year exclusivity period for Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
Further bolstering the PC gaming catalog, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is slated for a January 23rd Steam release. Several other high-profile PS5 exclusives remain unannounced for PC, including Gran Turismo 7, Rise of the Ronin, Stellar Blade, and the Demon's Souls remake.
