Simu Liu Working on Sleeping Dogs Film Adaptation

by Matthew Apr 21,2025

Fans of the critically acclaimed 2012 video game Sleeping Dogs might still see their wish for a film adaptation come true, thanks to the efforts of Marvel star Simu Liu. The project, which had been officially canceled earlier this month, could be revived as Liu is actively working to bring it to the big screen.

In a response to a fan's post on X/Twitter, Liu revealed his involvement, stating, "Working with the rights holders to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen." This comes after the film was initially announced in 2017 with martial arts star Donnie Yen set to lead the cast. However, the project vanished from the radar in 2018, and Yen recently confirmed its cancellation, expressing his disappointment and the significant effort he had invested.

"I spent a lot of time and did a lot of work with these producers, and I even invested some of my own money into obtaining the drafts and some of the rights," Yen shared. "I waited for years. And I really wanted to do it. And unfortunately... I don't know. You know how Hollywood goes, right?" Despite this setback, Liu's recent comments have reignited hope among fans.

The original Sleeping Dogs game, released on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, follows the story of detective Wei Shen as he infiltrates a notorious Triad crime syndicate in Hong Kong. Highly praised upon its release, the game scored an impressive 8/10 from IGN. Despite its success, no sequels were produced, leaving fans eager for more content related to the franchise.

Whether Liu will successfully secure the rights and bring the Sleeping Dogs film to fruition remains to be seen. However, his commitment has certainly rekindled the excitement surrounding this beloved game.
