Shawn Levy's Star Wars Film Nearing Release, Says Writer

by Aria Apr 13,2025

Are you eagerly awaiting Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars movie? Rest assured, the acclaimed director behind Deadpool & Wolverine is still hard at work on this much-anticipated project. We've even received a reassuring update from the film's writer, Jonathan Tropper. "I am [excited] too," Tropper shared with Screen Rant, hinting at the film's progress. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."

While details about the movie remain largely under wraps, we do know it will be set after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy shed some light on its timeline in a February interview with Deadline, stating, "That’s also in the future. It’s all post-[the first] nine. Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This positions Levy's film as the first to delve into the post-Rise of Skywalker era.

Kennedy also confirmed in the same interview that Levy's movie will follow the release of 2026's The Mandalorian and Grogu. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she explained. Additionally, there's buzz that Ryan Gosling is set to star in this exciting new addition to the Star Wars universe.

Tropper's words offer hope that Levy's film is on track, though fans will need patience as it's slated to arrive no earlier than the last quarter of 2026, or possibly even 2027.

It's been a while since Disney released a Star Wars film, with the last being the controversial Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. In the interim, several projects have been canceled, including a film from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. A Star Wars movie previously slated for late 2026 was also pulled from Disney's calendar in November.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm unveiled plans for three new Star Wars feature films. These include a New Republic film directed by Dave Filoni set in his Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie led by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order feature directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. The latter is set to see Daisy Ridley reprise her role as Rey post-Rise of Skywalker. The Obaid-Chinoy project has seen its share of changes, with screenwriter Steven Knight recently exiting after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. However, Rey remains a key focus for Disney's future Star Wars projects, with reports indicating she'll appear in multiple upcoming films.

And that's not all on Disney's Star Wars agenda. Late last year, it was revealed that X-Men producer Simon Kinberg is set to pen a new trilogy, which contrary to initial reports, will not continue the Skywalker Saga.

The next Star Wars content to grace your screens will be Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple-episode launch.
