The PlayStation Portal, Sony's innovative handheld gaming accessory for the PS5, resembles an extended split-pad DualSense controller with an 8-inch 1080p LCD screen integrated in the center. It transforms your PS5 into a portable gaming device by streaming games at up to 60fps. The controller replicates the DualSense's features, including haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and a touchscreen interface in place of the traditional touchpad. While it can stream games outside your home, a very stable and fast internet connection is essential. Remember, the PS Portal is not a standalone device; it requires a PS5 to operate.
Update: You no longer need a PS5 to enjoy games on the PS Portal. Sony has introduced a feature allowing owners to stream games directly from its PlayStation Now cloud streaming service. This means you can access over 120 games, including titles like Ghost of Tsushima, Resident Evil 3 Remake, The Last of Us Part 1 Remastered, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, without needing a PS5. To utilize this feature, you must subscribe to the highest tier of PlayStation Plus, which costs $18 per month—a much more appealing option than buying a PS5 and additional games.
It's worth noting that the PlayStation Portal isn't your only option for streaming PS5 games over Wi-Fi within your home. You can achieve similar functionality by using the PS Remote Play app on a mobile device or other gaming handhelds like the Steam Deck. However, setting this up is more complicated, and you'll miss out on some DualSense features.
PlayStation Portal Review by Seth Macy:
"The PlayStation Portal has pleasantly surprised me. I went in skeptical but came away loving it. It's a far superior experience compared to using a phone with a clip-on controller and works much better than I expected. The freedom to play my PS5 from anywhere with decent WiFi coverage is invaluable, especially when the TV is occupied by family playing the Switch. However, it's not a standalone device and requires a PS5 to function. The main drawbacks are its inability to connect to WiFi that requires a web browser login and its lack of Bluetooth audio support. Despite these issues, it's the best current solution for PlayStation Remote Play and a must-own for PS5 owners who enjoy handheld gaming or need to share the household TV."
