Ryan Reynolds Explains Deadpool's Exclusion from Avengers, X-Men

by Bella May 04,2025

Ryan Reynolds has cast doubt on the chances of Deadpool joining either the Avengers or the X-Men, stating that being a part of either team would signify the character was "at the end." This comment comes in the wake of the massive success of *Deadpool & Wolverine*, where Deadpool's desire to join the Avengers was a central theme. Speculation had been rife that Marvel Studios might want to see the 'Merc with a Mouth' team up with icons like Captain America and Professor X in the upcoming *Avengers: Doomsday*.

The cast reveal for *Avengers: Doomsday* last month prominently featured veteran X-Men actors such as Kelsey Grammer, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and James Marsden, solidifying the presence of the X-Men in the film. Grammer, who portrayed Beast in the Fox X-Men franchise, made his MCU debut in *The Marvels'* post-credits scene. Stewart, known for his role as Charles Xavier/Professor X, had a brief appearance in the MCU through *Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness* as a member of the Illuminati. McKellen, who played Magneto, along with Cumming (Nightcrawler), Romijn (Mystique), and Marsden (Cyclops), have yet to make their MCU debuts. This heavy inclusion of X-Men characters has led to speculation that *Avengers: Doomsday* might secretly be an *Avengers vs. X-Men* movie.

Despite the excitement around the cast, Reynolds' name was notably absent from the list of confirmed stars, which did include Channing Tatum, who played Gambit in *Deadpool & Wolverine*. Reynolds' recent comments to *Time* suggest that a formal promotion of Deadpool to the Avengers or X-Men is unlikely. "If Deadpool becomes an Avenger or an X-Man, we're at the end,” Reynolds explained. “That's wish fulfillment, and you can't give him that.” However, he hinted that a surprise appearance in a supporting role might be more fitting, referencing the positive reception to Wesley Snipes' cameo as Blade in *Deadpool & Wolverine*.

So, what's next for Deadpool if joining the Avengers or X-Men isn't on the table? Reynolds revealed he is currently working on a new project involving an "ensemble," though he remained tight-lipped about the details. "I'm writing a little something right now, that's, I don't know, it's an ensemble," Reynolds shared. "But, I like that [Deadpool] is isolated." This suggests another Deadpool movie might be in the works, potentially featuring numerous cameos similar to *Deadpool & Wolverine*. Characters like Wesley Snipes' Blade, Channing Tatum's Gambit, Jennifer Garner's Elektra, and Dafne Keen's Laura Kinney/X-23 could make a return.

As for *Avengers: Doomsday*, beyond the confirmed cast, little is known. Anthony Mackie, who will reprise his role as Sam Wilson/Captain America, recently expressed optimism, stating that *Avengers: Doomsday* aims to evoke the classic Marvel feeling fans cherish. Mackie's comments follow similar sentiments from Paul Rudd (Ant-Man) and Joseph Quinn (Human Torch). Additionally, a leaked set photo from *Avengers: Doomsday* stirred the MCU community, with some fans worrying it might spell trouble for the X-Men.

Speculation about Oscar Isaac potentially appearing as Moon Knight in *Avengers: Doomsday* has also surfaced, especially after he withdrew from this month's Star Wars Celebration due to scheduling conflicts. Marvel Studios producer Kevin Feige has acknowledged that the Avengers livestream did not showcase the entire cast of *Doomsday*, hinting at more surprises to come. "We revealed many, not all," Feige stated during a video call at CinemaCon.
