The Nintendo Switch 2 is generating buzz, especially with intriguing updates to its Joy-Con controllers as revealed by recent patents. While Nintendo hasn't officially confirmed these details, reports suggest that the Switch 2's Joy-Cons will feature magnetic attachments and can function similarly to a computer mouse.
According to a patent filed by Nintendo, "This game controller is detachably mounted to a body device that has a recess, that comprises a first magnet and a second magnet at the bottom of the recess, and that can execute game processing." The patent further explains that to detach the Joy-Cons from the Switch 2, users need to press two buttons located on the top surface of the controller's protrusion. These buttons are magnetically attracted to the magnets within the recess of the Switch 2 body.
The patent also includes illustrations showcasing the Joy-Cons' mouse-like functionality. Players can use the Joy-Cons by holding them railside down, with the R1 and R2 buttons acting as left and right mouse buttons, respectively. There's also a suggestion that the joysticks might enable some form of scrolling.Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con patent includes illustrations for the mouse functionality. Further illustrations demonstrate various configurations for this mouse-like feature, including using one Joy-Con as a mouse and the other as a standard controller.
The magnetic attachment of the Joy-Cons was one of the earliest leaks about the Switch 2, while the mouse functionality surfaced later and remains unconfirmed officially. However, a teaser released in January subtly hinted at this feature by showing the Joy-Cons gliding across a surface.
