Palworld CEO Takuro Mizobe recently spoke with ASCII Japan about the game's future, specifically addressing the possibility of transitioning Palworld into a live service title. The interview reveals a careful consideration of various options and the challenges involved.
Pocketpair CEO Discusses Palworld's Live Service Potential
A Profitable, Yet Complex Path
Mizobe confirmed that while new content—including maps, Pals, and raid bosses—is planned, the long-term direction for Palworld remains undecided. He outlined two potential paths: completing Palworld as a one-time purchase (B2P) game or transitioning to a live service model (LiveOps).
A B2P model offers complete game access after a single purchase, while a live service model relies on continuous content releases and monetization strategies. Mizobe acknowledged the business advantages of a live service model, stating it would increase profit potential and extend the game's lifespan. However, he also highlighted the significant challenges, primarily because Palworld's initial design wasn't built for a live service approach.
Crucially, player preference is a key factor in this decision. Mizobe pointed out the typical live service model—where free-to-play (F2P) games add paid content like skins and battle passes—doesn't directly translate to Palworld's current B2P structure. While successful F2P transitions exist (PUBG and Fall Guys being cited as examples), Mizobe emphasized the years of effort required for such a shift.
Other monetization options, like in-game advertising, were also considered, but deemed unsuitable for a PC game like Palworld due to potential player backlash. Mizobe noted the negative reception ads often receive from the Steam community.
Currently, Pocketpair is focused on increasing player engagement and satisfaction while carefully evaluating the best path forward for Palworld. The game is still in early access, having recently released the Sakurajima update and its anticipated PvP arena. The final decision regarding Palworld's future direction remains under consideration.
