The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to launch on June 5, 2025, and it's expected to be a highly sought-after item. To ensure that genuine Switch enthusiasts have the best chance to secure their units, Nintendo has introduced specific pre-order protocols on the official Nintendo Store.
On the My Nintendo Store, users with a Nintendo Account can express their interest in pre-ordering the Nintendo Switch 2 system along with "select accessories." Those who sign up will receive an invitation email when it's their turn to pre-order, with a 72-hour window to complete their purchase. However, there's a catch: to be eligible, you must have logged significant time on your existing Switch and be a member of Nintendo Switch Online.
"Invitation emails will be prioritized on a first-come, first-served basis to registrants who have purchased a Nintendo Switch Online membership with a minimum of 12 months of paid membership and a minimum of 50 total gameplay hours, as of April 2, 2025," according to the website's fine print.
Nintendo also clarifies that these invitations are "non-transferable" and will be sent to the email addresses linked to the interested Nintendo Account. Additionally, there will be a one-per-account limit on both the system and each accessory during the invitation period. Currently, interested parties can sign up for either a base Nintendo Switch 2 or a bundle that includes Mario Kart World.
After placing an order, units will be shipped with an approximate shipping date provided at the time of purchase. Nintendo warns, "Please note that release-day delivery is not guaranteed due to processing and shipment times."
Although not explicitly stated, these measures appear designed to prioritize gamers who intend to use the Nintendo Switch 2 for personal enjoyment rather than those looking to resell it online.

Scalping has plagued the release of many popular products, including the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and even the Pokémon Trading Card Game. Valve successfully managed this issue with its Steam Deck by using a queue system that linked purchases to Steam accounts and checked the account creation date. It's no surprise to see Nintendo adopting a similar strategy with its My Nintendo Store process.
While there will be other avenues to acquire a Nintendo Switch 2, these pre-order options are designed to help dedicated Switch 1 owners secure their new console amidst potential launch day frenzy.
