"Nintendo Switch 2 Enhances Switch 1 Games"

by Nicholas Apr 12,2025

The Nintendo Switch 2 has arrived, and as previously reported, it maintains a high degree of backward compatibility with Switch 1 games. However, Nintendo is taking things a step further by introducing specially enhanced versions of Switch 1 games for the Switch 2. These enhancements go beyond mere graphical upgrades and framerate improvements, offering a richer gaming experience.

What Games are Playable on Switch 2?

Nintendo has categorized games for the Switch 2 into three types: native Switch 2 games, which are exclusively developed for this system; compatible Switch 1 games, which can be played directly on the Switch 2 using their original cartridges; and Switch 2 Edition games, which are Switch 1 titles enhanced with new features and performance upgrades when played on the Switch 2.

This classification does not include the classic games accessible through the Nintendo Switch Online service, which spans titles from the NES, SNES, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, and now the GameCube.

So What Comes in a Switch 2 Edition Game?

The key highlight from the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct is that Nintendo aims to provide additional value for players who choose the Switch 2 Edition of a Switch 1 game.

For instance, Super Mario Party Jamboree on the Switch 1 will see its Switch 2 Edition enriched with a new feature set called Jamboree TV. This will leverage the Joy-Con 2's mouse controls, the Switch 2's microphone, and an optional USB-C camera. Additionally, the game will benefit from an upgraded resolution of up to 1440p in TV mode, a smoother frame rate, new minigames, and enhanced online functionalities.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, a cross-generation title, will support mouse controls via the Joy-Con 2 and offer multiple display modes. Quality Mode will deliver 60fps at 4K when docked and 1080p at 60fps in handheld mode, while Performance Mode will push 120fps at 1080p when docked and 120fps at 720p in handheld mode, with all modes supporting HDR.

Other Switch 2 Edition games will introduce new story content, such as Kirby and the Forgotten Land’s Star-Crossed World add-on. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will enhance gameplay with the Zelda Notes service in the Nintendo Switch App, providing guides and in-game assistance. However, games like Pokemon Legends: Z-A will focus solely on performance and resolution enhancements.

When are the Switch 2 Edition Games Coming?

The Nintendo Switch 2 is slated for release on June 5, 2025, coinciding with the launch of the first wave of Switch 2 Edition games. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom will be available on launch day.

Super Mario Party Jamboree + Jamboree TV will follow on July 24, 2025, and Kirby and the Forgotten Land’s update is scheduled for August 28, 2025. Both Metroid Prime 4: Beyond and Pokemon Legends: Z-A are expected sometime in 2025, though specific dates remain undisclosed.

How Much Will Switch 2 Editions Cost?

Pricing for Switch 2 Editions varies. New buyers can purchase these editions at retail, identified by their distinctive red-colored physical game cases. Digital versions will prominently feature the Switch 2 logo.

For those who already own the Switch 1 version and wish to access the Switch 2 Edition's enhancements, an upgrade pack will be necessary. These packs will be available at select retailers, the official My Nintendo Store, and the Nintendo eShop, though the cost has yet to be announced.

Certain upgrade packs, such as those for Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, will be included with a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, which also grants access to online features and a classic game library.
