Keanu Reeves has shared the most promising update yet on the long-awaited sequel to the 2005 cult hit, Constantine. Playing the role of John Constantine, an occult detective and exorcist from DC Comics, Reeves has expressed his desire to return to the character for over two decades. Now, it seems that Constantine 2 is closer to becoming a reality than ever before, following a successful pitch meeting at DC Studios.

In a recent interview with Inverse, Reeves revealed, "We've been trying to make this film for over a decade, and we just recently put a story together and pitched it to DC Studios and they said, ‘Okay.’ So, we're going to try and write a script." This development marks a significant step forward for the project, which has been eagerly anticipated by fans since the original film's release.

Despite this encouraging news, there remains no guarantee that Constantine 2 will receive the green light from DC Studios co-chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran. The sequel is not yet a confirmed project in the rebooted DC Universe (DCU), and neither Gunn nor Safran have mentioned it as a possibility. Thus, the project still hangs in the balance.

Reeves did, however, provide some insight into the potential direction of the sequel. He teased that if Constantine 2 does get made, it will be set in "the same world" as the original film. With a humorous tone, he added, "We're not going off that. John Constantine's going to be tortured even more."

These comments follow those from producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who shared in September that a script for Constantine 2 was already in his inbox. In an interview with ComicBook, di Bonaventura admitted to being hesitant to read it, saying, "You know it's in my inbox right now, funny enough. I'm too scared to read it, though, I want it to be good so bad. I’ll probably read it in the next few days, when I get on an airplane." His anticipation and fear highlight the high stakes and expectations surrounding the sequel.
