James Gunn Unveils First Look at Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow

by Jonathan May 03,2025

Cameras have begun rolling on DC's latest cinematic venture, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. To mark the occasion, DC's head honcho, James Gunn, took to Bluesky to share the first glimpse of Milly Alcock, known for her role in House of the Dragon, as she steps into the iconic boots of Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl. Gunn's post featured a photo of Alcock seated in her actor's chair, providing a technical first look at the character.

"Thrilled to see camera roll at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden on Supergirl, with Craig Gillespie at the helm and the phenomenal Milly Alcock as our Kara Zor-El," Gunn expressed in his post. This announcement also confirms that Gillespie, who directed Cruella and I, Tonya, will be directing the film, as previously reported last April.

While details about the movie remain under wraps, it's known that Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow draws heavily from the graphic novel of the same name by Tom King, Bilquis Evely, and Ana Nogueira. The comic presents a standalone tale of an alien girl, Ruthye Marye Knoll, who seeks Supergirl's help to avenge her father's murder by the villain Krem of the Yellow Hills. The graphic novel, which was nominated for "Best Limited Series" at the 2022 Eisner Awards, is a must-read for fans.

The film's cast includes Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem, Eve Ridley as Ruthye, David Krumholtz as Supergirl's father Zor-El, Emily Beecham as Supergirl's mother, and Jason Momoa, who has been recast in the DC universe as Lobo.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is set to be the second film in the newly revamped DC universe, following James Gunn's Superman, which is slated for release this summer. Other projects in development include The Batman Part II (which may or may not connect to Gunn's movie-verse) and a rumored Clayface movie from Mike Flanagan.
