In inZOI, cities can become eerily deserted if too many Zois die with poor karma. Discover how inZOI's unique karma system impacts gameplay and learn about its upcoming early access release.
inZOI Cities Can Become Ghost Towns
A City's Fate Tied to its Inhabitants' Karma
In inZOI, an abundance of ghostly figures can transform vibrant cities into desolate wastelands, significantly impacting the city's overall state. In a recent interview with PC Gamer, inZOI Director Hyungjun Kim highlighted the profound influence of the game's karma system on the player experience.
Kim explained, "Every action a Zoi takes accumulates karma points. Upon death, a karma evaluation determines their soul's fate. A low score results in becoming a ghost, requiring karma redemption before reincarnation."
Neglecting this karma system has severe consequences. Kim elaborated, "Too many ghosts prevent new Zois from being born, halting family formation. This places the responsibility of maintaining a city's vitality squarely on the players' shoulders." This dynamic adds a layer of strategic depth, challenging players to balance their Zois' actions to avoid ghostly overpopulation.
Kim clarified the system's nuanced approach: "It's not about enforcing 'good' actions and suppressing 'bad' ones. Life isn't simply good or bad; every life holds meaning and value. We encourage players to explore inZOI's karma system to create diverse narratives and uncover life's multifaceted nature."
Respecting The Sims' Legacy
inZOI is poised to be a significant contender in the life simulation genre, potentially offering the most substantial competition to The Sims in recent memory. However, Kim doesn't view it as a direct competitor.
He stated, "We see inZOI not as a competitor to The Sims, but as an alternative for fans of the genre." He expressed respect for the franchise's legacy: "We deeply respect the legacy The Sims has built. Achieving such depth in a short time is incredibly challenging, especially considering the vast and complex nature of simulating 'life' in its entirety."
inZOI's team aims to deliver a unique experience through its distinctive features. Kim emphasized, "inZOI empowers players to shape their desired lives using creative tools. Our realistic visuals (powered by Unreal Engine 5), in-depth customization, and AI-driven tools are designed to bring imaginations to life, allowing players to become protagonists within their own worlds."
