Chris Evans, the actor behind the iconic Captain America, has firmly denied rumors of his return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) for the upcoming film "Avengers: Doomsday" or any other future projects. In an interview with Esquire, Evans debunked a report from Deadline suggesting he would reprise his role alongside fellow original Avenger Robert Downey Jr., stating unequivocally, "That’s not true, though... Yeah, no. Happily retired."
The speculation about Evans' return was fueled by comments from Anthony Mackie, who succeeded Evans as Captain America in the MCU. Mackie mentioned to Esquire that he had not seen a script for "Avengers: Doomsday" but was informed by his manager that Evans might be coming back. However, Mackie later clarified that he had spoken directly to Evans, who confirmed he was not considering a return. "I talked to Chris a few weeks ago and it wasn’t on the table then... He goes, ‘Oh, you know, I’m happily retired'," Mackie recounted.
Despite his firm stance on not returning as Captain America, Evans did make a brief return to the MCU universe as his former Fox character Johnny Storm in "Deadpool & Wolverine," though this was more of a comedic cameo than a significant role.
The MCU itself is navigating through turbulent times, particularly following the departure of Jonathan Majors, who played Kang and was set to be the franchise's next major antagonist. Majors' exit after being found guilty of assault and harassment has led to a reshuffling of plans, with Marvel now pivoting to Doctor Doom as the new central villain, to be portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. This shift sparked further speculation about the return of other original Avengers, though no official confirmations have been made.
In related news, Benedict Cumberbatch, known for his role as Doctor Strange, has confirmed that he will not be part of "Avengers: Doomsday" but will have a "central role" in its sequel, "Avengers: Secret Wars." The film will be directed by the Russo Brothers, continuing the multiverse narrative with Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter also slated to appear.
