11 Bit Studios, the acclaimed Polish developer, has unveiled a new trailer for their highly anticipated sci-fi adventure, The Alters, as it nears its release date. In this latest reveal, the studio paused to reminisce about their groundbreaking project, This War of Mine, which catapulted them to international fame over a decade ago. This War of Mine is renowned for its somber and despairing ambiance, while The Alters takes a different route, exploring a more vibrant and occasionally humorous storyline focused on the trials faced by various alternate versions of the protagonist, Jan Dolski. Despite their stark differences in tone, the developers highlight a deep thematic bond between the two games.
Although This War of Mine and The Alters diverge significantly in setting and atmosphere, they share a central theme of survival. In This War of Mine, players confront the brutal realities of a war-torn city, managing scarce resources and facing daily challenges to keep their civilian group alive. Conversely, The Alters presents survival as a time-sensitive challenge, with players needing to maneuver a mobile base to evade a merciless sun that disintegrates everything in its path.
Both titles compel players to step beyond their comfort zones, venturing into perilous territories in pursuit of essential resources. The core distinction between the games lies in their protagonists: This War of Mine features players leading a group of diverse civilians, whereas The Alters introduces a unique team made up of different versions of the main character, Jan Dolski.
