Nintendo has officially clarified that the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games will indeed come with both the original game and an upgrade on the same cartridge. This statement comes in response to earlier confusion sparked by reports that suggested otherwise, which were based on comments from customer service representatives.
In a clear statement to Vooks, Nintendo confirmed, "Physical versions of Nintendo Switch 2 Edition games will include the original Nintendo Switch game and its upgrade pack all on the same game card (i.e., they are exclusively Nintendo Switch 2 game cards, with no download code)." They further noted that some publishers might opt to release Switch 2 Edition games as download codes within physical packaging, without a game card included.
Priced at $79.99, the Switch 2 Edition games offer enhanced experiences over their original Nintendo Switch counterparts. Notable titles include Kirby and The Forgotten Land - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Star Crossed World, Super Mario Party Jamboree - Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Jamboree TV, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. These games feature upgrades such as additional support for the Zelda Notes service in the Nintendo Switch App for games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, along with the introduction of achievements on the Switch 2.

Nintendo has also announced that not all Switch 2 game cards will contain actual game data. Some will instead be game-key cards, which provide a key for downloading the game. These game-key cards require a download upon insertion into the Switch 2 and will be clearly labeled on the front of the box. Examples of games using this format include Street Fighter 6 and the Bravely Default remaster, whereas games like Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza do not. Additionally, the expansive Cyberpunk 2077, which requires 64 GB on the Nintendo Switch 2, will be available on a physical cartridge.
