High Demand for Pokémon TCG's Prismatic Evolutions Leads to Production Increase
The Pokémon Company is responding to unexpectedly high demand for its latest Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) expansion, Scarlet & Violet—Prismatic Evolutions, by significantly increasing production. This follows reports of widespread shortages impacting retailers, particularly smaller, independent stores.

Addressing the Shortage:
A Pokémon Company spokesperson acknowledged the difficulties some fans faced acquiring Prismatic Evolutions products upon release. They confirmed the company is working at maximum capacity to print additional cards to meet the overwhelming demand. While this means a wait for some consumers, the commitment to increased production offers reassurance.

Impact on Retailers:
The surge in demand disproportionately affected smaller US-based Pokémon TCG retailers. Reports from PokeBeach, a dedicated Pokémon TCG fan website, highlighted how distributors limited supplies to 10-15% for local stores, while larger chains like GameStop and Target received significantly larger allocations. This resulted in limited availability for many local game stores. The owner of Player 1 Services, a major Maryland retailer, attributed this to stores that typically don't stock Pokémon TCG products placing large orders for Prismatic Evolutions.

This scarcity has also led to inflated prices on the secondary market. Products like the Elite Trainer Box are already selling for significantly more than their retail price. However, this situation is expected to improve once The Pokémon Company increases supply.

Expansion Details and Release Schedule:
Announced on November 1, 2024, and released on January 17, 2025, Prismatic Evolutions features Tera Pokémon ex, new special illustration rare cards, and ultra-rare Supporter cards. The set also includes reprints of popular cards with new artwork. Additional product releases are planned for February 7th (Surprise Box and Mini Tin), March 7th (Booster Bundle), and April 25th (Pouch Special Collection), 2025. A digital version of the set launched on Pokémon TCG Live on January 16, 2025.
