"Guide to Obtaining Armadillo Scutes in Minecraft"

by Zachary Apr 27,2025

Introduced in the *Minecraft* 1.20.5 "Armored Paws" update, the Armadillo is a passive mob that you can find across various warm biomes. This critter, adorned with hard "Scutes," plays a crucial role in crafting Wolf Armor, providing a new way to safeguard your canine companions. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to obtain Armadillo Scutes in *Minecraft*.

How To Get Armadillo Scutes in Minecraft:

Armadillos exclusively inhabit warm biomes and typically appear in groups of two or three. However, they have a unique defense mechanism: if approached hastily, they'll roll into a tight ball. To avoid this, players should approach them slowly and carefully.

Keep an eye out for Armadillos in the following biomes:

  • Badlands
  • Eroded Badlands
  • Savanna
  • Savanna Plateau
  • Windswept Savanna
  • Wooded Badlands

Once you've located an Armadillo, you have two primary methods for collecting its Scutes:

1. Watch and Wait:

Similar to how Chickens drop Eggs, Armadillos naturally shed one Scute every 5-10 minutes. This passive method requires no tools or effort, making it an easy option. However, if you're looking to craft multiple sets of Wolf Armor, this approach might be too slow and less engaging.

2. Brushing:

This method is often preferred and involves using a crafted Brush. While Brushes are commonly used to investigate suspicious sand or gravel, they're also perfect for gently collecting one Scute per brush from an Armadillo.

In the Java Edition of *Minecraft*, a fully durable, unenchanted Brush can be used four times on an Armadillo, whereas in Bedrock Edition, it lasts for five uses before breaking. Damaged Brushes can be repaired by combining two of them, and if they're enchanted, using an Anvil allows you to merge two damaged Enchanted Brushes while retaining both enchantments.

Brushes can be enchanted with Unbreaking, Mending, and Curse of Vanishing, enhancing their durability and utility.

To craft a Brush, you'll need a Feather, a Copper Ingot, and a Stick, arranged vertically in the center column of the Crafting Table.

When approaching a group of Armadillos, move slowly to prevent them from rolling up. Once close enough, use the appropriate button to brush the Armadillo and collect Scutes. With enough Brushes, you can gather a substantial number of Scutes for crafting Wolf Armor.

Minecraft Armadillo and Wolf Armor

Once you've collected the required six Scutes, head to a Crafting Table to create a suit of Wolf Armor for your loyal companion.

These are the current methods for obtaining and utilizing Armadillo Scutes in *Minecraft*. Whether you choose to wait patiently or use the Brush, you're now equipped to protect your Wolves in style.
