EA Plans Apex Legends 2.0 Release Post-Battlefield

by Lily Mar 27,2025

As Apex Legends approaches its sixth anniversary, EA has openly admitted that the game's financial performance is not meeting expectations. In a recent financial call discussing third quarter results, EA disclosed that Apex Legends net bookings have declined year-over-year, though they aligned with the company's projections.

During a Q&A session with analysts, EA CEO Andrew Wilson provided insights into the game's performance. He acknowledged Apex Legends as a monumental launch in the gaming industry over the past decade, amassing over 200 million players. However, he expressed concerns about its financial trajectory, stating that the business aspect of the franchise has not been progressing as desired. Despite ongoing efforts to enhance the game through quality-of-life improvements, anti-cheat measures, and new content, the results have been less than satisfactory.

To address these issues, EA is developing a significant update termed Apex Legends 2.0. This update aims to revitalize the franchise, attract new players, and boost revenue. However, Wilson emphasized that Apex Legends 2.0 will not coincide with the upcoming Battlefield release, expected before April 2026. Instead, Apex Legends 2.0 is slated for release sometime during EA’s 2027 fiscal year, ending in March 2027.

Wilson highlighted EA's commitment to long-term growth, suggesting that Apex Legends could follow the success of other enduring EA franchises. He envisions Apex Legends 2.0 as a stepping stone to even more substantial future updates, ensuring the game's longevity and continued appeal to both existing and new players.

The approach to Apex Legends 2.0 draws comparisons to Call of Duty: Warzone's 2.0 update, though the outcomes and fan reactions to such reboots can vary. EA remains focused on expanding the game's community and maintaining its position as a top-played title on platforms like Steam, despite a decline from its peak player counts.
