Captain America: Brave New World Nears $300 Million Global Box Office After 68% Domestic Drop Second Weekend

Captain America: Brave New World's box office performance is proving challenging. While the film has already grossed an estimated $289.4 million globally, a significant 68% drop in domestic revenue during its second weekend raises concerns about its profitability.

According to Deadline, the film's $180 million production budget necessitates a global box office gross of approximately $425 million to break even. The initial $100 million domestic opening weekend, while exceeding expectations, was followed by a considerably weaker second weekend gross of $28.2 million. This steep decline mirrors the performance of 2023's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which ultimately failed to recoup its costs.

Comscore data reveals a global gross of $289.4 million after two weekends ($141.2 million domestic and $148.2 million international), with a worldwide weekend two gross of $63.5 million. Despite being the biggest theatrical release of 2025 to date, the substantial second-weekend drop has surprised analysts. Paul Dergarabedian of Comscore commented to Variety that this significant decline reflects less audience enthusiasm than typically expected from Marvel films, suggesting a potential "new normal" for the franchise.

Deadline projects a final global box office gross of around $450 million for Captain America: Brave New World. This projection, coupled with generally poor critical reception (IGN awarded the film a 5/10), presents a significant challenge for Marvel Studios and Disney. The studios will be hoping for a strong box office rebound to counteract the recent underperformance of several MCU films (excluding the successful Deadpool & Wolverine) and build momentum for upcoming releases such as Thunderbolts in May and The Fantastic Four: First Steps in July.
