Baldur's Gate 3's eagerly awaited Patch 7 has finally been released, and the player community's response has been nothing short of spectacular, especially when it comes to the world of mods.
BG3 Modding Is “Pretty Big” Says CEO Swen Vincke
mod.io Founder Says Mods Surpassed 3 Million Installs
Since the release of Baldur's Gate 3's Patch 7 a few days ago, the player community has been buzzing with excitement. Following the patch's launch on September 5, over one million mods were installed, as reported by Larian Studios' CEO, Swen Vincke. "Modding is pretty big - we had more than a million mods installed in less than 24 hours," Vincke shared on X (formerly Twitter). Furthermore, mod.io and ModDB founder Scott Reismanis revealed that the total installations had exceeded 3 million and were still on the rise, stating, "Just ticked over 3m installs and accelerating," in response to Vincke's post.
Patch 7 brought a wealth of new content to the game, including new evil endings, enhanced split-screen gameplay, and the much-anticipated release of Larian’s own Mod Manager. This integrated tool allows players to effortlessly browse, install, and manage community-created mods without ever leaving the game.
The current modding tools are accessible as a standalone app via Steam, enabling modders to craft their own narratives using Larian's in-house scripting language, Osiris. Mod authors can also upload custom scripts and conduct basic debugging, with the ability to publish their mods directly from the toolkit.
BG3 Cross-Platform Modding in the Cards
In addition, as noted by PC Gamer, a community-developed "BG3 Toolkit Unlocked"—uploaded by modder Siegfre on Nexus—features a complete level editor and re-enables previously restricted features in Larian's editor. This development comes as Larian had initially been cautious about providing full access to all of its development tools. "We are a game development company, not a tools company," Vincke told PC Gamer, emphasizing that while players enjoy significant creative freedom, not all development tools would be supported for public use.
Vincke also mentioned that the studio is working on supporting cross-platform modding, a task he described as challenging. "It's not the easiest thing in the world because we have to make it work on consoles and on PC," he explained. "We'll start with the PC version. The console version will come a bit later because it has to go through a bunch of submission processes. It also gives us the time to see whatever goes wrong and fix it."
Beyond modding, BG3's Patch 7 introduced a variety of other enhancements to the game. Players can now enjoy a more refined experience with upgraded UI elements, new animations, expanded dialogue options, and a slew of bug fixes and performance improvements. With further updates expected from Larian, we can look forward to more details on their plans for cross-platform modding.
