In an insightful interview with Wccftech, the developers of Tides of Annihilation at Eclipse Glow Games shed light on their decision to integrate Arthurian myths and set the game in London. Dive deeper to uncover the game's concept and what the future holds.
Tides of Annihilation Aims For A Western Audience
The Central Concept Of Arthurian Myths And Knights
During Gamescom 2024, Eclipse Glow Games, the creators behind Tides of Annihilation, engaged in a revealing interview with Wccftech. They discussed the game's unique concept, its gameplay mechanics, and the possibility of developing an anthology.
As a China-based developer, Eclipse Glow Games chose a Western theme for Tides of Annihilation following the expectations set by their financial backer, Tencent. "This game and Black Myth: Wukong are two projects invested in by Tencent, with different market focuses. While Black Myth: Wukong was aimed at the Chinese market, Tides of Annihilation targets the Western audience, hence our choice of Arthurian legends," explained the game's producer. This led to the central concept revolving around knights, ultimately focusing on King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table.
Tides of Annihilation unfolds in a post-apocalyptic modern-day London, devastated by an Outworld invasion. The protagonist, Gwendolyn, emerges as the city's last human survivor. The game blends this modern setting with fantasy elements, drawing heavily from Arthurian myths.
Devil May Cry-inspired Combat And Over 30 Bosses
Action-RPG enthusiasts will recognize the combat style in Tides of Annihilation as reminiscent of the iconic Devil May Cry series. The developers confirmed this influence, stating, "It's definitely more like Devil May Cry," but they've introduced a difficulty selection feature to make the game more accessible to a broader audience.
Players can customize their combat style with a choice of four weapons and over ten Knights as companions. Gwendolyn discovers her ability to command the Knights of the Round Table, who join her in navigating the ruins of London to uncover the truth behind the invasion. With over 30 uniquely challenging bosses to defeat, the gameplay promises to keep players engaged. "Players will have to prepare for very challenging boss fights," the developers emphasized.
Plans Of Creating An Anthology
Eclipse Glow Games also expressed their ambition to expand the Tides of Annihilation franchise into an anthology, potentially exploring various settings and mythologies with different protagonists. "However, we plan to retain the Outworld invasion theme central to Tides of Annihilation," they noted, indicating a cohesive thread for the future anthology. The team is optimistic about the first title's success, which they hope will pave the way for more mythological explorations and new titles.
Currently in its beta phase, Tides of Annihilation is slated for a tentative release in 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Players will join Gwendolyn on her quest to defy fate and save not only London but also the intertwined fantasy realm of Avalon.
