Guilty Gear Strive Arrives on Nintendo Switch in January 2025

Arc System Works is bringing Guilty Gear Strive to the Nintendo Switch on January 23rd! This version includes 28 characters and boasts rollback netcode for online play. While cross-play isn't included, it's a welcome addition for offline and Switch-to-Switch battles. Having enjoyed it on Steam Deck and PS5, I'm eager to try the Switch version. Visit the official website for more details.

Reviews & Mini-Views

Bakeru ($39.99)

Let's be clear: Bakeru isn't Goemon/Mystical Ninja, despite sharing some superficial similarities with the series created by some of the same developers. It's its own unique experience. Bakeru, developed by Good-Feel (known for Wario, Yoshi, and Kirby titles), is a charming, polished 3D platformer.

The story follows Issun and Bakeru, a tanuki with shape-shifting abilities, as they traverse Japan, battling enemies, collecting cash, and uncovering secrets across sixty-plus levels. While not all levels are unforgettable, the gameplay remains engaging. I particularly enjoyed the collectibles, often reflecting the unique aspects of each Japanese location.

The boss battles are a highlight, showcasing Good-Feel's knack for creative and rewarding encounters. Bakeru takes creative risks, with some elements working better than others – a common occurrence in this genre. Despite its flaws, the game's charm is undeniable.

The Switch version suffers from inconsistent framerates, occasionally reaching 60fps but often dipping lower during intense moments. While not a major issue for me personally, those sensitive to framerate inconsistencies should be aware.

Bakeru is a delightful 3D platformer with polished design and inventive gameplay elements. While framerate issues on Switch hold it back slightly, and those expecting a Goemon clone will be disappointed, it's a highly recommended title.

SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

Star Wars: Bounty Hunter ($19.99)

Released amidst the prequel trilogy hype, Star Wars: Bounty Hunter follows Jango Fett, Boba Fett's father, on a mission for Count Dooku. The gameplay involves hunting targets, utilizing various weapons and a jetpack. While initially engaging, the repetitive gameplay and dated mechanics (common for 2002 games) become apparent. Targeting and cover systems are particularly problematic.

Aspyr's remaster improves visuals and performance, along with a better control scheme. However, the frustrating save system remains unchanged. Unlocking a Boba Fett skin is a nice bonus.

Star Wars: Bounty Hunter possesses a nostalgic charm, reflecting the era's game design. This remaster is the best way to experience it, but unless you crave a taste of early 2000s action games, the significant flaws might outweigh the nostalgia.

SwitchArcade Score: 3.5/5

Mika and the Witch’s Mountain ($19.99)

Clearly inspired by Studio Ghibli, Mika and the Witch’s Mountain puts you in the role of a rookie witch who must deliver packages to earn money to repair her broken broom. The vibrant world and characters are appealing, but the Switch struggles with performance, impacting resolution and framerate.

The core gameplay loop, while dedicated, can feel repetitive. The game's charm and interesting characters make up for some of its shortcomings, but those with more powerful hardware might prefer playing it on another platform.

If the concept appeals to you, you'll likely enjoy Mika and the Witch’s Mountain, despite its performance issues on Switch.

SwitchArcade Score: 3.5/5

Peglin ($19.99)

Peglin, a pachinko roguelike, has reached its 1.0 release across platforms, including Switch. The core gameplay involves aiming an orb at pegs to damage enemies and progress through zones. The game features upgrades, shops, and challenging battles. While initially difficult, the gameplay becomes more intuitive.

The Switch port performs well, though aiming isn't as smooth as on other platforms. Touch controls are a viable alternative. Load times are longer than on mobile. The addition of in-game achievement tracking is a plus.

Despite some minor issues with load times and aiming, Peglin on Switch is a great experience, especially for fans of the pachinko roguelike genre. The use of rumble, touchscreen, and button controls adds versatility.

Mikhail Madnani's Score: 4.5/5
