"Switch 2 VRR Limited to Handheld Mode, Nintendo Confirms"

by Sadie Oct 04,2025

Back in early April, fans of the Nintendo Switch 2 spotted references to variable refresh rate (VRR) support on official informational pages—only for those mentions to vanish shortly afterward. Now, Nintendo has officially clarified the extent of VRR functionality on the new console.

In a statement provided to NintendoLife, the company confirmed that the previously published details were inaccurate: "Nintendo Switch 2 supports VRR in handheld mode only. The incorrect information was initially published on the Nintendo Switch 2 website, and we apologise for the error."

When asked about the possibility of VRR support for docked mode arriving via a future firmware update, Nintendo responded with, "We have nothing to announce on this topic."

This means that while VRR is indeed available when using the Switch 2 in handheld mode, it will not be supported when the console is docked and played on a TV—at least for now.

The clarification comes after a wave of confusion sparked by the sudden appearance—and disappearance—of VRR references across multiple regional Nintendo websites. Digital Foundry contributor Oliver Mackenzie documented the changes, noting how the mentions were quietly removed over time.

Although the lack of VRR in docked mode at launch may disappoint some, there's still potential for future updates. Sony, for example, introduced VRR support to the PS5 through a post-launch system update, setting a precedent that Nintendo could follow.

In other Nintendo Switch 2 news, the company has released a list of titles receiving free performance upgrades on the new hardware, including Pokémon Scarlet & Violet and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Additionally, Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser confirmed that the company expects to have sufficient Switch 2 inventory to meet consumer demand throughout the holiday season.
